Introduction
Shannonside were contracted by Bellway to undertake the groundworks and civils package for a new housing development on Oakamoor Rd, Cheadle. As part of these works, a 250 linear metre culvert was required and NTS (UK) was engaged to design and supply the excavation support system to allow the culvert installation.
Challenges
The works were carried out with requirements to ensure maximum working space and clearance to allow the culvert installation. The depths ranged from 3.4m – 3.8m with a minimum of 2.3m under strut clearance required. As the culvert run was to be installed within a sloping site the shoring system had to provide both flexibility and strut position adjustment.
The Solution
NTS (UK) designed and supplied a 60m run of the unique single slide rail shoring system which was to be ‘leap frogged’ and re-used to complete the full 250m requirement. The system incorporates rolling struts which allow vertical adjustment and 6m plates which provided maximum clearance between struts (in plan), with the rolling struts, also positioned to allow for a maximum of 3.0m under strut clearance, both something which cannot be achieved with traditional box systems. The initial 60m slide rail run was installed within three days and allowed for a much faster method of working than the traditional sheet and frame solution which would have been the alternative method of working.
